An application of technical review

Technical review of Chinese engineering records.

Plays Research provides independent engineering analysis for transactions, seller readiness and technical disputes. Where Chinese-language materials are relevant, Dr. Shen can also review the original records directly and explain the findings in English.

This capability extends the same technical review to specifications, source-code comments, test results, development records and supplier evidence in Simplified or Traditional Chinese. Related supplier or pilot reviews can also be included where agreed.

From source material to engineering judgment

Translation conveys wording. Technical judgment also requires knowing which version was tested, under what conditions and which claims the result supports. Dr. Shen examines original Chinese records alongside architecture, test data and development context, and can explain the findings to English-speaking readers.

Records the review can cover

  • Product specifications, requirements, and acceptance or delivery criteria.
  • Test protocols, raw results, failure records, equipment and operating conditions.
  • Source-code comments, released builds, change records and interface documents.
  • Engineering correspondence, development roadmaps and supplier technical records.

Factory visits and on-site engineering reviews

Where agreed, the work can also include authorized factory visits and on-site engineering reviews in mainland China, conducted in accordance with applicable local law. Site access, the review scope, confidentiality and data handling are agreed before the visit.

How the analysis develops

Keep the original context

Identify the document, version, terminology and test conditions, and flag ambiguities to clarify with the engineering team.

Compare claims with records

Trace the technical statement to test, code or design evidence and examine consistency across the materials.

Explain the decision implications

Distinguish supported findings, unresolved questions, and the additional evidence or engineering work needed.

Illustrative question: what does the factory inspection establish?

Illustrative example – not a client case. A record marked as passing a factory inspection does not, by its title alone, establish that the equipment passed the buyer’s agreed factory acceptance test. The inspection items, samples, load, duration and pass criteria need to be examined.

If the record covers only pre-shipment functional checks, the review distinguishes those checks from sustained output, site integration or customer acceptance requirements. The findings identify what the existing record establishes and what further evidence is needed.

Where this fits

Transaction technical due diligence

Examine the performance, scaling and development assumptions behind an investment or acquisition so the deal team can assess the evidence, gaps and implications.

Vendor technical due diligence & readiness

Map Chinese engineering records to external technical claims before review, identifying missing evidence and explanations that need work.

Technical evidence for disputes

Clarify terminology, development sequence and system behavior in original Chinese materials so counsel can examine competing technical explanations.

Outputs and scope

Findings connect the original records and any on-site observations to the technical question, identifying discrepancies, open issues and implications for performance, readiness or a dispute. The work can include a claim-to-record comparison and explanations of technical terminology, incorporated into the agreed technical memo, readiness plan or counsel briefing in English. Access to records and team discussions are scoped for the engagement.

Start with the decision ahead.

Send Dr. Shen a brief, non-confidential outline of the technology, the decision and the deadline.

The initial discussion covers fit, available evidence and scope, followed by agreement on deliverables, timing, fees and confidentiality arrangements.
